CONMEBOL, the South American soccer governing body, suspended a number of Uruguayan international players on Wednesday in response to events that occurred during the Copa America semifinal matchup between Uruguay and Colombia in July.
Liverpool striker Darwin Núñez will be out for five Uruguay fixtures, while Tottenham midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur was banned for four matches. In their upcoming World Cup qualifying matches, Uruguay will host Paraguay on September 6 and play Venezuela four days later. Núñez is also expected to miss the games in October at Ecuador and Peru as well as the home game against Colombia in November at Nunez and Bentancur have been banned for five and four games, respectively, following an altercation during the Copa America, resulting in the suspension of five Uruguayan players.
